A round of golf, a set of tools, and a BBQ set may be common gifts for your dad on Father’s Day, but we’ve seen politicians highlight their appreciation for their fathers, and their mothers who acted as both parents, year-round in a handful of political ads and videos.
In honor of Father’s Day, here are our 5 favorite tributes to fathers, and single mothers, in political ads and PSAs:
1. Angel Soft’s “Happy Father’s Day, Mom” Campaign
This video may be one of the most heartwarming videos of 2015. Angel Soft released a campaign called, “Happy Father’s Day, Mom” honoring single moms who had to be both mom and dad, both “soft and strong.”
2. Carl Sciortino’s “Father’s Son” Ad
Massachusetts 2013 congressional candidate Carl Sciortino put a new spin on the “like father, like son” concept by featuring his dad (a Tea Party member) in a spot to promote his run for Congress as a progressive Democrat.
3. President Barack Obama’s Father’s Day Address 2014
President Obama released this video on Father’s Day highlighting the importance of fatherhood. Obama grew up without a father and praises his mother – and other single moms – who raised kids without extra support.
But Obama states that a strong male role model in a child’s life is important, which is why he called for child support reform and encouraged strong parenting and fatherhood.
4. “Like Father, Like Son” 1967 PSA
“Like Father, Like Son” aired in 1967 and became an infamous anti-smoking PSA released by the American Heart Association. The ad depicts a son picking up habits from his father – which may even include smoking.
5. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s son, Dante
While Bill de Blasio was running in the New York City mayoral race in 2013, Dante, his son, was featured in this political ad, speaking about raising taxes, building affordable housing and ending stop and frisk policies in New York City.
Danta was an important part to the campaign –humanizing Bill and showing how his father’s policies hit close to home.
