To maintain consistency, the grammatical equivalent of “First Lady” would be “First Gentleman.”
For example, if previous President Bill Clinton were to move-back into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. next year, we do know this:
- He would not be referred to as “President Clinton” or “President Bill” out of respect for the sitting president (his wife) and to avoid confusion
- He may not even become anything more than her spouse as the history has shown that widowed presidents appointed a close female relative to serve as First Lady
- Bill Clinton has expressed interest in being referred to as “First Man” or “First Dude” (jokingly)
The electorate will just have to wait and see what title Bill will assume if Hillary does become the 45th President of the United States.
