Compulsory voting is a system in which voters are obliged to submit a ballot in elections. And if an eligible voter does not go to their polling place or send in their ballot, the voter may be subject to a penalty – sometimes fines, sometimes community service.
As of 2013, 22 countries have laws for compulsory voting, including 11 Latin American countries, as well as Australia, Belgium, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nauru, Singapore and Thailand.
