A leadership PAC is considered as a type of nonconnected PAC under the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Politicians form these PACs to help fund the campaigns of other candidates.
In 1999, the NY Times reported that leadership PACs were “the fastest-growing segment of political fundraising.” At the time, more than 30 senators and 75 representatives had established a leadership PAC and contributed over $19 million to federal candidates, parties and outside groups in the 2000 election cycle.
In the 2014 election, the total contribution by leadership PACs exceeded over $60 million.
