Donald Trump could run as an independent in the 2016 presidential election. In early September, he signed a “Republican loyalty pledge,” which means he would support whoever is the Republican nominee and would not run as a third party candidate.
However, the pledge doesn’t legally bind him to the Republican Party.
A poll from USA Today/ Suffolk University showed that 68% of Donald Trump’s supporters would vote for him if he ran as an independent. Inevitably, Donald Trump took to social media to brag about his support:
