Robert Carabas, who is seeking election for California’s 5th District Assembly seat, was born in Montana to Greek immigrant parents. After the premature death of his father, Carabas and his mother worked various low-paying jobs to pay for Carabas’ eventual degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating in 1972, he went on to be the Corporate Credit Manager of a Fortune 500 Oil Company, Natomas Company, until he went back to school to pursue his art. He worked as an artist and carpenter for twenty years.
Carabas helped lead the charge on the Berkeley Schools Education Program where he worked with his local government to seek tax dollars for renovations to schools. He is now running for the seat with a focus on living wages, health care and protecting the environment. Robert lives with his wife of 47 years, Leslie Commons, in Sonora. Together, they have two children and five grandchildren.
