David Chiu is the incumbent Democratic candidate for California’s 17th State Assembly District. The 17th District encompasses eastern San Francisco. The eldest son of immigrant parents, David Chiu grew up in Boston and earned his Bachelor’s degree in government, master’s in public policy and law degree from Harvard University. Chiu has served as a civil rights attorney with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, a criminal prosecutor with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and a founder and Chief Operating Officer of a public affairs technology company, Grassroots Enterprise. Chiu also served as the Democratic Counsel to the U.S. Senate Constitution Subcommittee and well as Senator Paul Simon’s aide to the U.S. Senate Budget Committee.
David Chiu was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2014. Before joining the State Assembly, David Chiu served as President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for six years and became the first Asian American president of the Board. Chiu’s reputation as a problem solver led his fellow board members to repeatedly select him as President of the board for three consecutive terms. He currently lives with his wife Candace Chen in San Francisco.
